Vertebrae Segmentation of CT Image based on Fuzzy Energy-Based Active Contours

In this article, we use the new fuzzy energy-based active contour models for segmentation of vertebrae of computed tomography (CT) image. Different parts of vertebrae show different gray values, because the different physical parts of the vertebral bone have different density. Therefore it is difficult to extract the vertebrae from a CT image via traditional methods. Our method is capable of detecting contours, by given only one initial curve which can be anywhere. Our experiments present that this approach is better and more robust than classical methods of image segmentation.
