Efficient Cell Association Scheme for Heterogeneous Network
Using a mix of macro base stations(BSs) and pico BSs, heterogeneous networks make flexible deployment and provides high data rates. In conventional cell selection scheme, users measure the received SNR from all BSs and choose a serving cell providing the strongest SNR. In heterogeneous netowork, SNR based cell selection causes most of users are served by the macro cell while few users select low power BSs that causes imbalance of network utilization. LTE standards suggests that range expansion(RE) scheme that expands the coverage of smaller cells with distance and SNR with offset measure. While RE provides load balancing between macro and pico BSs, it induces frequent occurrence of outage so that some supplement is needed. We propose a new cell selection scheme that users having high potential to generate outage are to compare new measurement including not only the number of users in near cells also measured SNR. The new cell selection scheme provides the dominant effects on both load blancing and outage. Simulation results show that proposed schemes shows good 50% user throughput and 5% user throughput and perform well in various cell deployments.
