STUDIES ON RESIDUAL STRESS AND DISTORTION IN TIG WELDING OF THIN PLATES WITH A TRAILING HEAT SINK
Distortions and residual stress affect the dimensional precision and performance of welded components. Addition of a heat sink trailing the weld torch has been reported to be effective in controlling distortions and stresses. This work aims to study the cooling capacity of a liquid nitrogen heat sink and its effect on welding of thin plates using numerical and experimental methods.
