MONTE CARLO SIMULATIONS OF THE FRACTURE BEHAVIOR OF HUMAN DENTIN USING VMIB MODEL

In this work, a multiscale model, which is based on the combination of the Virtual Multidimensional Internal Bond (VMIB) theory and Monte Carlo method, was employed to simulate the fracture behavior of human dentin. The bond stiffness function was described by Weibull random fields, and the heterogeneity of dentin was characterized using Monte Carlo method. The simulated crack growth resistance curve of crack propagation in the middle dentin showed good agreement with the previous experimental results. And, for the first time, the simulations of crack propagation in the superficial and deep dentin revealed that the fracture toughness closely depended on the region of human dentin. The proposed model could be used to characterize the fracture behavior of human dentin comprehensively and properly.
