A MODEL FOR FREE VIBRATION ANALYSIS OF TIMOSHENKO BEAMS WITH COUPLE STRESS

This paper contains a model for the free vibration analysis of Timoshenko beams, using a modified couple stress theory, which includes an additional material length scale, thus allowing a more complete description of micro-beams. The model relies on the Hamilton s principle and the Ritz method. The natural frequencies of beams with different boundary conditions are computed using the present model and a study relating the ratio of classical elasticity to couple stress strain energies is also performed. By establishing this relation,an explicit formula to obtain the natural frequencies,in which the couple stress is accounted for as a function of the classical elasticity natural frequencies,is found. This formula can be used in the design and analysis of micro-beams which present size effects dependency, since it allows an expedite computation of natural frequencies.
