Improved Alternatives of Barrel Shifter Used in Reconfigurable Design of Block Cipher Algorithms
Reconfigurable design is an important research direction in hardware implementation of cryptographic algorithms. Since shift right logical appears seldom in block cipher algorithms according to our statistics, a new idea of reconfigurable shifter is proposed, that is, rotating left, rotating right, shift left logical 3-in-l barrel shifter. Furthermore, four alternative schemes are presented. Based on optimum synthesis of their Verilog HDL implementations on a FPGA, we obtain that the time and the area is reduced by 19.7% and 31.9% than those of classical 4-in-1 scheme respectively and the new schemes are of great practical value.
