DANUM System for Single-hop Wireless Mesh Networks

In this paper, we present a Delay-Aware Network Utility Maximization (DANUM) system aimed at serving users of a single-hop wireless mesh network. The basis of the DANUM model is the application of a new optimization variable that enables the comparativeness of utility definitions for TCP and UDP flows. As a result, the DANUM system is able to apply the NUM-derived priorities to delay-sensitive streaming media flows and delay-insensitive filetransfer flows. Moreover, the soft admission ability is enabled, allowing to serve at least some of the flows despite network congestion. The proposed implementation is based on a Linux kernel module which is responsible for indirect delay-aware flow control and an approximation of the Max-Weight Scheduling policy - both performed above the MAC layer. To the authors knowledge, the proposed solution is the first delay-aware NUM system, interoperable with widely-used protocols of the wireless networking stack, such as TCP, UDP, IP, and 802.11 MAC. The functional value of the system has been confirmed experimentally in the physical testbed emulating a network used in a home single-hop multi-service scenario.
