Full-wave Detectors for Noncoherent Ultra-wideband Communications
Performances of full-wave detectors used in ultrawideband (UWB) communications have not been addressed in the literature. This paper discusses the basic signal detection scheme and error performances of this receiver architecture. The theoretical bit error probability is derived using Gaussian approximation that satisfies well in UWB systems. Simulation results are provided in the additive white Gaussian (AWGN) channel model which shows that the bit error rate (BER) of full-wave detectors is almost identical to energy detectors (EDs) with merely a small power disadvantage. Besides, this paper indicates that due to different features of signal detection techniques from EDs, it is potential for full-wave detectors to achieve an appropriate tradeoff between error performance and system complexity.
