An Improved Otsu Algorithm and its Application in the Detection of Laser Spot
In free space laser communication, correctly detecting and tracking on the energy center of beacon is a prerequisite and basis for communication. But in a real environment, as the impact of atmospheric turbulence, laser becomes highly divergent after transmission through the atmosphere, image in the CCD camera is the divergent speckle. Because of energy distribution of the divergent speckle, it is difficult to accurately locate the energy center of the main beam. In this paper, we consider that an image with a laser spot consists of a main spot, some speckles and background. Our purpose is extracting the main spot from complex background. That is, to extract the main spot as foreground and merge the speckles into background. We propose an improved Otsu algorithm, which uses twice consecutive the degree of energy approximation to control the number of recursive computation, then separates of the main spot and speckles to the greatest degree, finally obtains center coordinate of the laser spot utilizing a centroid algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility and practicality of the proposed algorithm.
