A Power-Efficient Method for Token Protocol

Token protocol provides a flexible framework for designing new coherence protocols. However, messages in typical token protocol are always broadcasted, which results in significant power consumption. Power consumption has become one of the primary design constrains for microprocessor. In this paper, a power-efficient method which employs a filter table is proposed to reduce power. The filter table records the recently used blocks, when a local cache miss happens, the core checks if matching blocks exist in the filter table. If the type of the request is GETS, the filter table provides the blocks owner information. If the type of the request is GETX, the requestor sends requests to all the blocks sharers. So the token protocol only accesses the nodes which hold the tokens, neednt broadcast messages to all the nodes, this reduces the reference times of the interconnect network and caches, and thus reduce the systems power by avoid useless messages. Results from our analytical model show that this method reduces power and network traffic efficiently.
