Information Technology in MTI Curriculum: Training Translators for the Real World

Recent decades have witnessed the rapid growth of international demand for professional translation, particularly localization, a new type of translation, due to the advances of information technology (IT) and the process of globalization. Meanwhile, the work process of translators has also been drastically changed by information technology. Translation has become a computer-based activity. However, professional translation education in China has just begun and it is still largely based on the traditional linguistic-skills-centered teaching. Introducing IT to the curriculum for Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) program offered in China is of urgent needs and great significance. The author presents in this paper a three-level model for including IT teaching in MTI program to turn out professional translators for the real world. The model includes teaching of computer basics, advanced translation tools and software translation. It is expected to be used as a reference for IT teaching in professional translation education in China. The most important idea behind the model is to improve the professional profile of students for a better occupational integration. Besides, the model also aims to introduce students to the localization industry and help innovate professional translation education in China. It is concluded that various stakeholders in the translation industry might benefit from the IT-inclusive translation teaching practice.
