Experimental Study of Hop-based Energy Aware Routing Algorithm under Smart Grid Environment

As an important part of smart grid, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have attracted lots of attention in recent years due to their wide potential applications. To date, many energy efficient routing algorithms have been proposed to improve energy efficiency and prolong network lifetime, with techniques like clustering, data fusion or some optimization methods such as genetic algorithm, fuzzy logic or particle swarm optimization etc. However, energy balancing problem arises when certain particular nodes or routes are overused. In this paper, we propose an Improved Hop-based Energy Aware Routing (HEAR-I) algorithm for WSNs based on our previous work, which can achieve both energy efficiency and balancing. It considers not only the hop number and distance but also residual energy of the next hop node. Simulation results show that our algorithm outperforms other routing algorithms in energy consumption, hop number and network lifetime.
