PUNCHING SHEAR RESISTANCE OF SHEARHEAD CONNECTION BETWEEN FLAT SLAB AND TUBULAR COLUMN

This paper presents a new shearhead system which can eliminate punching shear failure between flat slabs and steel tubular column. Two tests, one using square steel tube and one using circular steel tube, were conducted. A comparison of the test results with existing design code methods indicates that the combined steel tube and shearhead system may be treated as an enlarged column for calculating punching shear resistance of the flat slab. It is expected that this assumption would be valid only if the load carrying capacities (shear and plastic bending moment resistance) of the arm of the shearhead system (sheararm),which may be treated as a cantilever beam, are not exceeded under the applied load. Extensive finite element simulations, using the general finite element package ABAQUS,have been conducted to check this assumption. The finite element parametric study has investigated the effects of different arrangements for the sheararm length, the sheararm cross-section dimensions, the angle of inclination at the end of the sheararm, the reinforcement ratio and the column dimensions. It has been concluded that an inclination angle of 45° gives the most effective shearhead system. To check the load carrying capacities of the sheararm, the applied load through the column may be considered to be distributed under the inclined area at the end of the sheararm.
