YIELD LINE MODEL FOR PREDICTING THE STATIC STRENGTH OF TUBULAR T-JOINTS WITH COLLAR PLATE REINFORCEMENT
As the radial stiffness of the chord is much weaker than the axial stiffness of the brace in a tubular Tjoint under axial compression loading, failure usually occurs on the chord surface near the weld toe. To improve the static bearing capacity of the Tjoint, collar plate can be used to reinforce the entire joint. After reinforcement, the static strength of the T-joint is necessary to be evaluated accurately. Based on both the experimental and numerical observation to the failure mode, yield line model can be used to calculate the bearing capacity of the reinforced T-joints. In this paper, the equation for predicting the static strength of a tubular T-joint under axial compression loading is deduced based on yield line theory. The accuracy and reliability of the proposed equation are then assessed from both the finite element analysis and the experimental measurement. It is found that the yield line theory can provide reasonably estimation for the bearing capacity of T-joints with collar reinforcement.
