LIMIT ANALYSIS OF STRUCTURES CONTAINING FLAWS BASED ON THE ELASTIC MODULUS REDUCTION METHOD

Catastrophic failures are often occurred in structures containing flaws (SCF),and safety evaluation on ultimate bearing capacity is often required to be performed for SCF based on limit analysis. Because of the problem of stress concentration,it is difficult for many numerical methods to be used on limit analysis of SCF. The elastic modulus reduction method (EMRM) presented recently as a new elastic modulus adjustment procedure (EMAP),is adopted in limit analysis of SCF in this paper. The element bearing ratio and energy equilibrium theorems are applied to the algorithm. As a control parameter,the element bearing ratio is used to show the plastic yield level of every element under complex condition,and the energy equilibrium theorem is introduced into elastic modulus adjustment strategy. Numerical examples show that it is feasible and efficient to employ the EMRM in the limit analysis of SCF.
