STUDY ON UNSTIFFENED AND STIFFENED COLD-FORMED SHS AND RHS STUB COLUMNS

Based on the test results of eighteen unstiffened cold-formed stub columns with square hollow section and rectangular hollow section, finite element models of these steel tubes with thickness of 8,10 and 12 mm were created. Compared with the experimental strength, the numerical strength and prediction strengths using the GB code and AS/NZS standard of these unstiffened columns were all smaller. Thus the prediction methods are all conservative and the AS/NZS standard is the most conservative. Meanwhile, finite element models of stiffened stub columns with the same contour dimensions as the unstiffened sections were also created. Four lipped angles and two lipped channels were used to form the stiffened sectional columns with two stiffeners and four stiffeners, respectively. Generally, prediction strengths of the stiffened columns are somewhat larger than strengths of the unstiffened columns. Numerical strength was also compared with the prediction strengths of the GB code and AS/NZS standard. It shows that the numerical method could be better to predict the strength of the GB code than that of the AS/NZS standard.
