FREE VIBRATION OF TENSIONED BEAM WITH KELVIN MODEL DAMPER

Attaching an intermediate damper near the anchorage of stay cable is a comman practice for vibration suppression. However, some combined effects, such as bending stiffness and damper stiffness are still not well investigated yet. This paper studies the free vibration of tensioned beam with a Kelvin model damper. The dynamic stiffness method is applied to obtain the problem formulation; both clamped and pinned supports are considered for the characteristic equations. The complex eigenvalue problem is solved by numerical interation. The parameter studies are carried out to investigate the influence of damper location, support conditions, damper stiffness, damper damping coefficient and bending stiffness on the complex eigenvalue. It is found that the complex eigenfrequencies trace loci in the complex plane, and each variable has particular effects on vibration frequency and damping.
