EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE SHEAR STRENGTH OF ABNORMAL JOINT PANEL ZONE IN STEEL FRAME

Low-cyclic reversed loading tests were conducted on six abnormal joints with 1/4 scale, which were designed according to the principle of strong-member and weak-connection. The objective was to investigate seismic performance of the steel abnormal joints and shear strength of the panel zone. During the test, yield conditon was firstly observed at the center of the top panel zone before weld cracking, and the whole panel zone can reach the yield condtion. There were four types of failure and the critical failure mode was the weld crack between bottom continuity plate and column flange. All specimens performed satisfactorily in the test and shown advanced seismic performance. According to analysis on shear mechanism of the panel zone,it is found that the bottom panel zone has restriction to the top panel zone, which results in the increasing of shear force carried by the top panel zone after yielding. In addition, shear strength equation of the panel zone given by AISC specification underestimates shear strength of the abnormal joints tested in this work. Therefore,a new strength equation for abnormal joints is proposed based on experimental results.
