MECHINICAL BEHAVIOR OF DOUGONG IN CHINESE ANCIENT TIMBER BUILDING

Chinese historic building is famous for its timber structure and the essence and marrow of timber structure is Dougong. Dougong is the most distinctive features of ancient Chinese architecture. The construction and mechanical properties of its components are complex. It can not only enhance the bearing capacity of beam but also form a good ductility node with beam and piles to reduce vibration and relief energy. In the analysis of timber-framed buildings,the Dougong is ususlly added as a node to the calculation diagram. But the role of Dougong in the structure can not be ignored. In this paper,numerical simulation was used to analysis the structural characteristics of Dougong. The finite element model of the typical Dougong node was established including columns and beams. Non-linear finite element method was used in the analysis. The load-displacement curve of Dougong was achieved after applying vertical load to the model. The failure mode and load transfer mechanism were studied.Then the roles of various parts of Dougong were discussed.Apply low level of cyclic load to the model,the hysteretic behavior was studied and the structural performance of dougong under earthquake was discussed.
