SEISMIC DESIGN AND LESSONS LEARNT FROM MASONRY STRUCTURAL DAMAGES IN 5-12 WENCHUAN EARTHQUAKE

Typical building damages of masonry structures in 512 Wenchuan Earthquake were first investigated. Based on the analysis of damage characteristics, this paper sums damage rules and lessons learnt from the megaearthquake. Seismic principles, key problems, and design suggestions to improve the earthquakeresistant performance of masonry structures are also proposed. It is concluded that, the vested seismic design objectives of masonry structures can be achieved provided that seismic concepts, structural details, design requirements, and construction quality are accurately performed.
