COMPRESSION BEHAVIOURS OF SPRAYED GFRP REINFORCED MASONRY COLUMNS UNDER CONCENTRIC AND ECCENTRIC LOADING

Different from bonding or wrapping FRP sheets externally on masonry surface,a new strengthening scheme by spraying Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) onto masonry surface is investigated. The experimental program focus on the compressive behaviors of unreinforced brick masonry columns strengthened with sprayed GFRP. Three thicknesses of sprayed GFRP with two different fibre lengths were attempted. 4 brick column specimens subjected to concentric axial loading and 6 specimens subjected to eccentric axial loading were tested, which was aimed at clarifying the typical failure modes and the strengthening effects in different spraying thicknesses and different glass fibre lengths. In addition,a comparison of sprayed GFRP with and without glass fibre mesh help for the strengthening effects was also explored. The test results showed that the proposed retrofitting technique was significantly effective for compressively strengthened masonry columns, large enhancements in compressive strength and strain capacity were achieved, for which both of appropriate spraying thickness and chopped fibre length were also suggested.
