WAVELET DAMAGE INDICES AND GENETIC ALGORITHMS BASED DAMAGE DETECTION PROCEDURE
Several continuous wavelet transform (CWT) based damage indices have been developed by the authors to detect the damage of structures suffering from sudden damage and linear time-varying damage. A wavelet damage indices and genetic algorithms (WDI-GA) based damage location procedure using previously proposed CWT-based damage indices is developed in this paper to bring out the damage position and damage severity embedded in the damage indices. The damage indices can be classified into two types: one type of damage indices is obtained from the shape of scalogram of an impulse response at each time instant. The other type of damage indices is related to the ratios of the scalograms of impulse responses at different locations of the structure and at the scale relevant to the frequency of a certain mode. The objective function used in genetic algorithms is defined as the sum of relative errors of scalogram shape changes and scalogram peak ratio changes. Numerical examples,including sudden damage and linear time varying damage cases,are given to show the effectiveness of the proposed WDI-GA based-damage detection procedure.
