APPLICATIONS AND ADVANCES OF CFD MODELS AND METHODS IN COMPUTATIONAL WIND ENGINEERING
Computational wind engineering (CWE) as a branch of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been developed rapidly over the last two decades to evaluate wind effects on structures numerically. To offer an alternative technique for practical applications,it is necessary to develop CFD models and methods and promote their applications in wind engineering. In recent years,we have been conducting research works based on Large Eddy Simulation (LES) in the following aspects: (1) A general inflow turbulence generation method for LES is presented,which can strictly guarantee divergence-free condition without any additional improving step and is able to synthetically generate inflows having prescribed spatial anisotropy and spatial correlation conditions as well as satisfying arbitrary target spectra in three orthogonal directions; (2) A new dynamic oneequation subgrid-scale (SGS) model for LES is proposed,which is suitable for relative coarse grid situations and simulation of high Reynolds number flows; (3) A new numerical simulation approach for evaluation of wind-driven rain (WDR) effects on buildings based on modified Eulerian multiphase model is developed,which significantly reduce the complexity in evaluations of WDR parameters,simplify the boundary condition treatments and is more efficient to predict transient states of WDR,spatial distributions of rain intensity,impacting rain loads on building surfaces,etc. The proposed new methods were used for predictions of wind effects on both long-span and tall buildings. The simulation results revealed that the proposed models and methods are effective tools for numerical evaluations of wind loads and driven rain on building envelopes with complex geometries and in high Reynolds number turbulent flows.
