DETERMINATION OF AERODYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF VEHICLE-BRIDGE SYSTEMS USING LES METHOD
To investigate the safety of vehicles running on a long-span bridge under high winds, the aerodynamic characteristics of both vehicle and bridge deck need to be determined. This paper thus employs the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) method as one of powerful computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques to explore the aerodynamic characteristics of both vehicle and bridge deck in a vehicle-bridge system. A number of cases, including vehicle on either ground or bridge deck, are investigated using the CFD Fluent software in a 3D space. The effects of vehicle position on different deck lanes and the details of bridge deck on dynamic characteristics are considered. Comparisons between simulation results and wind tunnel test results are also performed to validate the computer simulation method used in this study. The comparative results are satisfactory and the simulation results provide more information on aerodynamic characteristics of both vehicle and bridge deck.
