AN ENGINEERING APPROACH TO DYNAMIC STRESS ANALYSIS OF LONG SUSPENSION BRIDGES UNDER MULTI-LOADING

Computation of dynamic stresses of long suspension bridges under multi-loading is essential for both strength and fatigue assessments of the bridges, and long time history records of dynamic stress responses are often required for fatigue assessment. This paper proposes a computationally efficient engineering approach to the dynamic stress analysis of long suspension bridges under multi-loading. By neglecting the coupled effects of multiloading-induced dynamic stresses, the stress analysis of coupled wind-vehiclebridge system can be reduced to the superposition of stresses induced by railway, highway, and wind loading, respectively. By neglecting the dynamic magnification related to an impact factor, the moving trains and road vehicles can be simplified to static forces moving on the stress influence lines. Windinduced stress response is computed based on the estimated buffeting and self-excited forces on the bridge deck. The three individual stress responses are then superposed to obtain the multiple loadinduced stress response. The Tsing Ma Bridge and the Wind and Structural Health Monitoring System (WASHMS) installed on the bridge are employed to verify the feasibility of the proposed method. The results demonstrate that the proposed engineering approach is feasible and efficient.
