THEORY AND PRACTICE OF MLRF AND MEAN LOAD METHOD OF BRIDGE STRUCTURE INSPECTION AND EVALUATION
When inspecting and evaluating the existing bridges, the associated facilities (i.e. the lanes) would be partly or fully shut down temporarily which brings two significant drawbacks simultaneously. First,it would block the traffic definitely; second, the way of loading for the site testing is prescribed and empirical, has not been well validated. Because there is still no one Chinese specification for the evaluating the safe capacities of existing bridges, two on-line inspecting and evaluating paradigms of highway bridges and overpasses are proposed hereby, which are modified load and resistance factor method (MLRF method) comparing to the AASHTO LFRD practice in U.S. and mean load method, respectively. These paradigms dont block the traffic and can more accurately determine the safe load carrying ability of existing bridges. Based on the increasing existence of weigh-in-motion (WIM) data, the MLRF method will be more and more realistic in future application. And mean load method for specific bridge can significantly reduce the cost of reparation. The paradigms proposed here have been adopted by Tsinghua University Structural Engineering Inspection Center and are valuable to be referred to by peer engineers during practice when appropriate.
