ANALYSIS OF EARTHQUAKE-INDUCED POUNDING FOR TWO ADJACENT SDOF SYSTEMS

Earthquake-induced structural pounding may result in considerable damage or even lead to collapse of colliding structures during severe ground motions if the separation between two buildings is not enough. The aim of this paper is to study the pounding of two adjacent single-degree-of-freedom (SDF) structural systems during severe earthquake. A simplified Hertzdamped model is adopted to analyze the poundinginvolved response under four ground motions. It concludes that pounding will increase acceleration response and cause large impact force. The structural displacement response will also increase for shortperiod structures due to pounding. However, the pounding will decrease the displacement response for long-period structures.
