APPROACH OF THE COLLAPSES OF SCHOOL BUILDINGS FROM THE VIEW OF ROBUSTNESS

5.12 Wenchuan earthquake is the severest earthquake since the foundation of P.R. China (M8.0). The collapses of the school building had caused severe injuries and deaths in the past earthquakes. Based on the existing researches about robustness,this paper has proposed the concept of the vulnerable component and that the vulnerable component coinciding with the key component to a certain degree would lead to progressive collapse and poor robustness of the structure,some analysis of the collapse of common teaching building was carried out based on this statement. Furthermore,the robustness of the common teaching buildings was evaluated. Finally,several reinforcing methods based on robustness were also introduced.
