INFLUENCE OF UPLIFT ON STRUCTURES IN EARTHQUAKES

This work focused on the influence of structural uplift on rigid and flexible foundations on the activated forces in the structure. The experimental investigations were performed using a scaled model. The ground excitation was produced by a shake table. The inelastic deformation of the structure is simulated by an artificial hinge at the support. The flexibility of the foundation is considered by a sand box. The results confirmed the beneficial effect of uplift on structure. However,when the foundation is flexible the generated inelastic deformation in the soil might have a consequence for the drift at the top of the structure.
