SIMPLIFIED METHOD FOR SEISMIC EVALUATION OF STRUCTURE WITH VISCOUS DAMPERS

Linear Static Procedure for the conventional structure is first introduced. Subsequently this procedure is extended to the analysis of the structure with supplemental viscous dampers. The detailed steps for seismic assessment of the damped structure are presented based on the Chinese design response spectrum. Application of the proposed simplified method of analysis is illustrated through response time history analyses of the structure with added viscous dampers using artificial earthquake accelerations compatible with Chinese design response spectrum. Analysis results show that the presented method can rapidly yet effectively evaluate the seismic performance of the structure with velocitydependent energy dissipation devices,particularly at the preliminary stage of analysis and design.
