STOCHASTIC SEISMIC RESPONSE AND GLOBAL RELIABILITY OF NONLINEAR STRUCTURES

The probability density evolution method (PDEM) is incorporated with a novel representation of stochastic process to implement stochastic seismic response analysis and global reliability evaluation of nonlinear structures. A 9-story shear frame under stochastic seismic excitation, which exhibits strong nonlinearity in structural behaviours,is investigated. The results demonstrate that the PDEM combined with the novel spectral representation is accurate and efficient not only for stochastic seismic response analysis, but also for global reliability assessment. Besides, from the numerical examples the conclusion could also be drawn that it is imprudent to suppose the PDFs of stochastic seismic response and extreme value as regular distributions which may lead to errors.
