RECENT STUDIES ON BLAST RESISTANCE OF SANDWICH STRUCTURES
A general overview of our recent research efforts related to the blast resistance of sandwich structures is presented in this paper. The survey covers a number of typical sandwich structures subjected to various blast loads with the different core materials and different geometry features. Generally, three major works are included in the paper,i.e.,large deformation of square sandwich plates with honeycomb and foam core subjected to air blast loadings, radial crushing of sandwich tubes under inner blast loading, and singly curved sandwich panels subjected to air and simulated blast loads. For each study, experiments were conducted first to obtain the primary deformation and failure features and then detailed information was further revealed by the FE models and a parametric study followed. If the problems related are tractable with several assumptions based on the experimental and numerical results, explicit solutions were provided. From all our investigations, several characteristic features on the blast resistance of sandwich structures can be summarized.
