Current status and future prospects of development of sweetpotato industry in China

Using the results from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation (FAO) and our recent surveys, this paper describes the current status of sweetpotato industry in China. China is the largest producer of sweetpotato in the world. According to the statistics of FAO,the average planting area of sweetpotato in the last five years was 4.1 million hectares, and it was 3.675 million hectares in 2008. The share of the sweetpotato planting area in China among the world total decreased from 60.0% in the beginning of this century to about 45% in 2008. However, based on our unofficial survey, the sweetpotato planting area in China was about 4.6 million hectares in last year, and still accounting for a-bout 50% of the world total. The average production per hectare was 22.5 tons, similar to that of previous years, and the total fresh yield was about 100 million tons. At present, the major problems that the sweetpotato industry faces include heavy pollutions associated with sweetpotato processing, emergence of new viruses, the presence of many serious diseases, migration of diseases from southern China to northern China and vice versa, mixing of diseases from different planting areas, insufficient farming mechanization, lack of diversities and poor quality of processed products, poorly regulated systems for seed and seedling management,etc.. This paper also summarizes the recent developments and progresses in innovation and creation of new resources of sweetpotato germplasms in China, molecular biological researches, breeding new varieties, developing high yield cultivation technologies, control of pests and diseases, and industrial processing of sweetpotato. The authors predict that, in the next few years, the sweetpotato planting area in China will be stabilized around 4.5 million hectares, the yield per hectare will be slightly increased, and the total production will be maintained around 100 million tons. Intensified and specialized planting and management promoted by leading enterprises will be the future directions. The planting areas of fresh-food varieties food and specialized varieties (with purple flesh or leaves for vegetable use) will be remarkably increased. Superior varieties with special utilities will surely be expanded rapidly. In addition, issues such as research, development and application of new machines, control of pests and diseases, and minimizing pollutions during starch processing, will be addressed and par-tialy solved.
