Construction and primary utilization of core parents for sweet potato breeding in Northern China
Sixty-two parents of sweetpotato frequently used in northern China were analyzed using inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers to understand their genetic differences. The results indicated that wide genetic differences, with genetic similarity coefficient (GSC) ranging from 0.388 5 to 0.774 3 (average=0.497 7),were present among the tested cultivars, especially among domestic and exotic cultivars. Core parent groups for high starch content, edible usage and multiple uses were constructed based on the GSC among the tested cultivars and their integrated agricultural characteristics. The polymorphic bands of 93.61% ,94. 12%,and 93.73% were retained in the 3 core parent groups respectively. The controlled crossings were carried out among the core parents in the same group. Among them, the fine combinations of Xushu 781 x Jishu 98,Beniazu-ma×Xushu 781,Minamiyutaka x Xuxhu 18,Xushu 18×Minamiyutaka were selected at higher selection frequencies of 14.2%,9.1%,6.1% ,and 6.1% respectively than the average frequency of 4.2% in the first year.
