The effect of NaCl stress on antioxidant enzymes activity in transgenic sweetpotato expressing CuZn superoxide dismutase and ascorbate peroxidase genes
Antioxidant enzyme activities in transgenic sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas L. cv. Yulmi) plants expressing both CuZn superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) genes were evaluated under different concentrations of NaCl treatment. The result indicated that the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD),ascorbate peroxidease (APX),peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) activity in leaves of transgenic sweetpotato (TS) were always higher than non- transformed sweetpotato (NS) under NaCl stress. We observed that the antioxidant enzyme activities in TS leaves increased quickly below 100 mmol/L NaCl and reached the peak value at 100 mmol/L NaCl,then decreased slightly at 150 mmol/LNaCl;however those in NS showed slight or no increase below 100 mmol/L NaCl,and decreased sharply at 150 mmol/L NaCl,and the APX activity was decreased even at 100 mmol/L NaCl. These results indicate that sweetpotato over-expressing CuZnSOD-APX gene might efficiently tolerate the salt stress.
