New sweetpotato cultivar Tamaakanewith good brewing qualities and adaptability to direct lanting
Tamaakane is a newly released sweetpotato cultivar with good brewing qualities and adaptability to direct planting;this cultivar was developed at National Agricultural Research Center for Kyushu Okinawa Region. Tamaakane was selected from the seedlings obtained by a cross between Resist and Kyukei179 in 1996,and it was released in 2009 as the first exclusive cultivar with orange flesh for use as a raw material for Imo shochu production. Tamaakane has high storability and is resistant to root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) and rootlesion nematode (Pratylenchus coffeae);further, the yield of this cultivar is comparable to that of Koganesengan, which is the leading variety of sweetpotato used for the production of distilled spirits (Imo shochu). Tamaakane shochu contains high amounts of P-ionone generated from P-carotene present in the flesh during the brewing process, thus the product has tropical fruit-like flavors. In addition, the yield of Tamaakane by direct planting is higher than that by transplanting, and this suggests the possibility of mechanization and establishment of a labor-saving cultivation system.
