Breeding and cultivation of a new sweetpotato variety-Xiangshu 20
Xiangshu 20 developed by Hunan Crop Research Institute in 2003 was bred by sexual hybridization with Xiangshu 16 as a female parent and Xushu 22 as a male parent. Its average yield of fresh root was 36,841. 1kg hm-2 and that of dried root was 12,562.5kg hm-2 in multi-location experiments in Hunan; and the average yield of fresh root was 49,726.0 kg hm-2 and that of dried sweetpotato was 16, 583.0 kg hm-2 in production experiment in different areas, all of which were significantly higher than those of the control variety Nanshu 88. Xiangshu 20 has many other favored characteristics, such as drought tolerance,good storage,good quality, resistance to bacterial wilt and black spot, and high dry rate (about 33.1%). To cultivate Xiangshu 20,attention should be paid to the following key techniques; selecting seed carefully,culturing strong seedlings,ploughing deeply,twin-rows in high ridge,rational fertilization,strengthening field management and harvesting in time.
