SO-2 induces stomatal closure in sweetpotato and acts upstream of H-2S and NO signaling pathways
In this work,we demonstrated that Na-2SO-3/NaHSO-3 (3 : 1),sulfur dioxide (SO-2) donor solutions induced the stomatal closure in Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas) mediated by nitric oxide (NO) signaling transduction. Application with the SO-2 donor to seedling leaves of sweetpotato could promote the stomatal closure in a dose-dependent manner. Rapid increment of endogenous H-2S and NO levels were observed in sweetpotato seedling after application with the exogenous SO-2 donor. Combined with exogenous H-2S donor,NO donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and NO scavenger 2-(4carboxyphenyl)-4, 4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1oxyl-3-oxide (cPTIO),further investigations showed that H-2S and NO induced stomatal closure significantly;while the SO-2 and H-2S mediated effects were alleviated by cPTIO. These results indicted that SO-2 induced stomatal closure probably mediated by the H-2S and NO pathway and acted upstream of H-2S and NO signaling.
