Salinity tolerance of different sweetpotato varieties in saline soils of the Yellow River Delta

Sweetpotato Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam. is widely cultivated in North China for starch and bio-ethanol production nowadays because of its high yield and adaptation to marginal lands. Nine varieties were planted in saline soils of the Yellow River Delta in Dongying of Shandong province for evaluation of their performance under the salt-stress condition. It was found that there were significant differences in the capacity of salt tolerance between different genotypes, after the agronomic traits were analyzed. By measuring the fresh weight and dry weight of storage roots from different varieties, cultivars Taizhong 9,Sushu 7,Longshu 1 and Xushu 18 showed higher salt tolerance than others. The contents of Cl~- ,Ca~2+ ,Na~+ and K~+ in young leaves, mature leaves, fibrous roots and storage roots from the experimental plants were significantly different in the same parts of different varieties. After the sweet potato was harvested, the levels of total soil salinity and nutrient composition were also significantly reduced.Based on this study,it was suggested that salt tolerance evaluation of sweet potato should be based on fresh weight and dry weight of its storage roots. Cultivation of salt-tolerance sweet potato in the Yellow River Delta not only improve saline soils and protect the local ecological environment, but also increases farmers income.
