Study on uptake and distribution of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas L.)

Field experiment was conducted to research the uptake and distribution of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in purple sweetpotato Ningzi 1. The whole plants were sampled at 15 day intervals, which were separated into shoots and storage roots to study dynamic changes in contents and absorption of N, P,K. The results showed that 11.24 kg of total nutrients was absorbed by the whole plant to produce 1000 kg fresh roots, with a ratio of N,P,K at 1 : 0.69 : 2.32. The accumulation characteristics of N,P, K varied in different growth stages. The absorption of nitrogen by the sweetpotato plant occurred mainly at the early and middle growth stages, followed by a reduction that resulted from fallen leaves in late growth period. In the meantime, phosphorus and potassium were each absorbed over 90% in the late stage. A minor difference appeared at total uptake of N,P,K between shoots and storage roots. The majority of nitrogen was accumulated by leaves and stems, while storage roots absorbed the majority of phosphorus and potassium. The rates of N,P,K uptake were 1∶0.60 ∶ 2.03 in shoots, 1∶0.82 ∶ 2.69 in storage roots.
