Potential for upgrading sweetpotato value chains in Asia
Available statistics show that Asian sweetpotato (SP) production has been in decline, despite the potential of the crop to contribute to poverty reduction, food security and economic growth. This paper reviews available information on SP production and utilization and then considers current utilization trends, and four diverse examples from China, Philippines, India and Vietnam. It addresses three key questions: DWhy is SP in decline across the region, in comparison to other root and tuber crops? 2) Is it worthwhile to arrest this decline, or is crop substitution a better option? 3) What effective and realistic options (escape routes) exist to turn the fortunes of the crop around? Based on these analyses, the paper identifies R&D priorities to overcome the constraints and realise the potential of this crop for economic and social development objectives.
