Analysis of Bauxite by X-ray Diffraction Using Synchrotron Radiation

Given known limitations of conventional X-ray diffraction an attempt was made to study mineralogical nature of selected bauxite samples using synchrotron radiation (SR). The objective of the study was to verify whether the SR could overcome the bauxite amorphous content and result in representative diffractograms. Better quality diffractograms might facilitate verification of the mineralogical phases known to occur in bauxite and reveal structural details of bauxite that were previously impossible to observe. The paper discusses qualitative and quantitative details related to different bauxite samples obtained using diffractograms recorded at Japan Synchrotron Radiation Research Institute (JASR1). Reliability and accuracy of the phase quantification process using methods such as wet chemistry (WCh), Rietveld-XRD, XDB and BQuant are also discussed.
