New design and operation of the Paragominas beneficiation circuit

The Paragominas Bauxite Mine Project is the first in the world to combine a beneficiation plant with a long distance slurry pipeline. Specifications for the integrated operation include requirements for separating product and waste, by particle size classification, grinding to produce slurry with rheological characteristics appropriate for pipeline transport and superfine content in the slurry compatible with efficient operation of dewatering filters. The plant flow-sheet consists of a sequence of comminuting and classification stages designed to process 7 million tonnes per year of in each of two lines. This paper describes the somewhat unusual flow sheet and complexities of operating the Paragominas - Miltonia plant detailing the learning curve beneath optimizing the process and applying design changes to improve performance and balance between sizing based specifications for product/waste classification, slurry transport and efficient dewatering, with conflicting demands.
