Harmonizing of bauxite mining and alumina refining operations with neighboring communities for sustainable development in Jamaica

Jamaica is a small island state approximately 10,991 sq km in size. Bauxite mining commenced in the early 1950s. Its bauxite reserves are located within the central two-thirds of the island, in areas ranging from deep rural communities to densely populated townships. Bauxite mining and alumina refining operations in Jamaica have therefore traditionally taken place within or in close proximity to rural communities.
