Options for processing of high silica bauxites
This paper reviews the options for processing high silica bauxites within the general framework of the Bayer process. Options are described in terms of three categories; (1) Reduce the input of reactive silica, (2) Modify the process to produce a lower soda residue and (3) Recover soda from DSP by re-processing residue. Different approaches are often bauxite specific. One of the more general beneficiation options - the roast-leach process (sometimes called thermo-chemical activation) is critically examined and advancements in the fundamental understanding of this process, particularly the nature of the silica produced, are presented.
