New flocculants for improved processing of high silica bauxites
The production of alumina from bauxite requires an effective solid-liquid separation in gravity thickeners to generate liquor containing low amounts of suspended solids. As the amount of reactive silica in the bauxite increases, this separation often becomes more difficult due to the formation of desilication products (DSP). The presence of DSP can have a detrimental effect on various areas of alumina production and cannot be overcome using existing flocculants. As a result, new polymers have been developed that significantly improve the flocculation of suspended DSP solids when added to the slurry in combination with conventional flocculants. These polymers have been found to be applicable for slurries generated by the digestion of gibbsitic and diasporic bauxites in the Bayer Process. Recent developments demonstrating the performance benefits will be presented.
