Inhibiting vishnevite scale formation in Chinese refineries with the second generation of MAX HT? technology

Sodalite and cancrinite are two common forms of sodium aluminosilicate scale formed in evaporators and digester heaters, where gibbsitic and boemhitic bauxites are processed. In contrast, bauxites mined in China are predominantly diasporic and contain high amounts of potassium bearing silicate clays. The presence of potassium in Bayer liquor induces the formation of vishnevite; a potassium containing aluminosilicate scale. It has been observed that MAX HT, the first generation of aluminosilicate scale inhibitors produced by Cytec Industries for the Bayer process, has limited efficacy for the inhibition of vishnevite scale in Chinese alumina refineries. By comparison it has been proven that MAX HT 550, the second generation of the scale inhibitor is far superior in terms of vishnevite scale inhibition. This paper summarizes the laboratory results simulating the formation and inhibition of vishnevite scale using both Cytec MAX HT and MAX HT 550 scale inhibitors.
