Yield improvement by optimisation and online control of A/C of aluminate liquor in digestion unit while feeding miscellaneous sources of bauxite
The Bayer process involves dissolution of alumina from bauxite using caustic liquor at high temperature and pressure in digestion unit to make an alumina rich solution. During the Digestion process, Alumina to caustic ratio in the aluminate liquor plays an important role to optimize the yield. For that, ratio of bauxite slurry to spent liquor has to be controlled carefully to ensure the digested slurry contains desired amount of alumina. If too much bauxite is added, some of the available alumina will not get extracted and hydrate precipitation occurs too early in the process. Addition of too little bauxite reduces production rate, hence opportunity loss. So blow off A/C ratio (alumina to caustic ratio) in the digestion blow off liquor has to be optimized. The measures taken to improve the digestion yield by l).Optimizing charging ratio through lab scale studies and comparison with plant data while feeding multiple bauxite sources. 2).0nline measurement of alumina to caustic ratio and controlling the same by varying spent liquor & bauxite slurry flows and thereby achieving the targeted production rate to maximize cash flow are discussed.
