Improvement in capacity of high rate decanter through process modifications
One of the important steps in the Bayer process is the solid-liquid separation by which the particulate materials are removed from the feed slurry. Bauxite contains various impurities which need to be separated out after digesting the bauxite along with caustic solution at high temperatures and pressures. The HRDs separate the digestion slurry into clear overflow liquor with low suspended solids and a thickened mud underflow stream. Settling of digestion mud is aided by the addition of synthetic flocculant and continuous agitation by the rake mechanism. Present paper discusses 35% increase in capacity than design maximum by adopting simulation and operational control strategies while handling various qualities of bauxite. Modifications done in flocculant dosing system and optimization has been discussed.
