Modern ventilation and emission reduction from reduction cells for production of primary Aluminium
Good ventilation of reduction cells is an important aspect of smelter operations. Potrooms should and can be operated in a clean environment and emissions such as fluoride and particulates are treated in the gas treatment centers (GTCs) before the air is discharged into the atmosphere. In recent years, further advancements have been made in reduction of emissions by improving cell ventilation. One particular technology is the use of high draft ventilation that today is standard in almost every new Western design smelter. Although easier to incorporate in new smelters, high draft technology can also be used in existing smelters where it actually was used first. In this resentation some of the principles and impact of the high draft technology will be discussed. High draft work in conjunction with modern GTC technology and in the presentation an overview is provided on available technologies and their specific features. Finally, smelters will be facing higher cost for low sulphur coke as raw materials for the production of anodes. High sulfur cokes will be cheaper and more readily available but regulations are becoming more stringent to exceed sulphur emissions from smelter operations. In this presentation a summary is provided on modern technologies for SO2 removal in conjunction with primary aluminium smelters.
